Battalion (BN CDR): This position is the most demanding in a JROTC battalion. Instructors select the cadet for this position based upon demonstrated leadership ability and academic standing. The appointed cadet must be able to apply common sense and judgment in solving problems that affect the entire cadet corps. The brigade commander must be mature, willing to accept responsibility, be able to effectively delegate authority and supervise subordinates. The battalion commander controls the staff through the battalion executive officer, the battalions through battalion commanders, and the companies through company commanders.
Battalion Executive Officer (BN XO): The cadet battalion executive officer supervises, directs, and coordinates the battalion staff to prevent overlapping efforts and to ensure that the commander’s intent is understood and achieved. The battalion XO keeps the staff informed of the BDE commander’s policies and keeps the battalion commander informed of the status of projects assigned to the staff. The battalion XO assumes command of the battalion in the absence of the battalion commander.
Battalion Command Sergeant Major (BN CSM): The CSM is the senior representative of enlisted (PVT-SGM) cadets within the organization and responsible for their health and welfare. The CSM provides in depth critical input into key enlisted promotions, and all other actions pertaining to the enlisted members of the corps. The CSM is in charge of the unit Color Guard along with the maintenance and care of the organization colors.
STAFF SECTION
S-1: (ADMINISTRATIVE) - The primary duties of the S-1 is to create a cadet record containing basic information and liability/release statements pertaining to JROTC per cadet and to update and create orders for promotions and awards as designated by the SAI/AI. The S-1 is also responsible for the accuracy of personnel data in JUMS.
S-2: (SECURITY) - The primary duties of the S-2 is to perform monthly inspection and inventory of all sensitive items and storage areas. Make on-the-spot corrections of discrepancies found during security inspections and inform the battalion commander and Instructor staff of issues and resolutions. Ensure all fire, safety, and physical security standards are being met, and perform other duties as assigned by the battalion commander, the battalion executive officer, and the Instructor staff.
S-3: (TRAINING) - The mission of the S-3 is to contribute to the establishment of a trained and ready unit staffed with competent, service-oriented professionals of unquestioned integrity, focused on technically correct, precise execution of tasks promoting the trust and confidence of Stephens County High School JROTC. The S-3 will assist in the creation and maintenance of annual and weekly calendars and create warning and operations orders for all upcoming events. The S-3 will input the Cadet Challenge physical fitness test into JUMS.
S-4: (LOGISTICS) - The S-4 assists the Army Instructor in receiving, issuing, and inventorying uniforms and supplies. They will also assist the Army Instructor in maintaining individual clothing records, ensure that the supply room is clean, neat, and orderly at all times, and inform the Army Instructor of shortages and availability of expendable and non-expendable supplies.
S-5: (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) - The mission of the S-5 is to develop a recruiting plan, to maintain, number, and archive all battalion events and activities. The S-5 is the unit historian.
