Biography:
LTC Smith enlisted in the United States Army in February 1982, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon his discharge in 1986 he attended San Jose State University where he graduated in 1989 and was commissioned a Regular Army Transportation Officer through the Army ROTC Program. LTC Smith's previous assignments are platoon leader, Bravo Company, 122D Main Support Battalion, 3D Armored Division; Platoon Leader and Executive Officer, 501st Transportation Company, 53D Transportation Battalion; Commander, 270th Transportation Detachment, 53D Transportation Battalion; Commander, 2D Movement Control Region, 25th Transportation Movement Control Agency; Commander, B Company, 702D Main Support Battalion, 2D Infantry Division; Operations Officer, 2D Brigade, 91st Division; Adjutant, 702D Main Support Battalion, 2D Infantry Division; Division Transportation Officer, 1st Infantry Division; Executive Officer, 27th Transportation Battalion; Senior Instructor, Australian Army Logistic Management College; and Training Officer, Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, NATO. During his military career, LTC Smith attended a number of courses to include resident Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), the Meritorious Service Medal (5th Award), the Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), the Army Achievement Medal (5th Award), the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and a number of other awards and campaign credits. LTC Smith’s overseas service includes ten years in Germany, five years in Korea and two years in Australia, as well as deployments to OPERATION DESERT STORM from 1990 to 1991, KFOR 4A in Kosovo in 2001, OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003 and Afghanistan with the International Security Assistance Force from 2006 to 2007. LTC Smith’s civilian education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a Minor in Military Science from San Jose State University where he graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1989. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Education, Adult Education and Distance Learning from the University of Phoenix in October 2005. LTC Smith retired from the Army on 1 July 2008 after 23 years of service and immediately began his duties as the Senior Army Instructor for Lebanon High School’s fledgling JROTC program. The program earned the Honor Unit with Distinction status in 2011. His rifle team at Lebanon High School was the best Army JROTC team in the United States the last several years and was undefeated in their league of sixteen Oregon and Washington schools for the last nine years. In addition, they won numerous state, regional and national matches. Seventeen of his shooters earned the coveted Junior Distinguished Badge for attaining a series of high rankings in junior air rifle championships. In 2013 he was voted the Most Inspirational Staff Member by the students of Lebanon High School. LTC Smith has been married to Nanako for over 32 years and they have two daughters: Sierra who is 19 and Catarina who is 17. After spending a year working as a JROTC Instructor on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, I am happy to be back as the Senior Army Instructor for the Army JROTC program at Lebanon High School. Biography:
SFC Sell was born in Pasadena, California on 10 July 1961. He entered active duty in September 1978 as an Infantryman attending basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon completion of training he was immediately assigned to Fort Richardson, Alaska and served as a rifleman in a scout platoon with HHC 1 BN, 60th IN. SPC Sell was a primary climbing and skiing instructor for incoming personnel to the unit. After his 3 year commitment was up, SPC Sell was honorable discharged from active duty and entered the civilian life where he remained for 5 ½ years before returning to active duty. SPC Sell’s first assignment was Fort Bragg, North Carolina and after attending the Basic Airborne Course. He reported to B Company, 1st BN, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment in September of 1988 where he served as a rifleman, Assistant Machine gunner, Machine Gunner and Dragon Gunner as a member of the Anti Tank Team. He was then reassigned to Korea in December of 1989 where he was assigned to Camp Casey with the 2nd Infantry Division. He reported to A Company 2nd BN, 503 Infantry Regiment and served as the Radio/Telephone Operator (RTO), rifleman, Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) Gunner and Fire Team Leader while conducting over 30 combat patrols on the Korean DMZ. After his tour in Korea, SFC Sell was reassigned to The Presidio of San Francisco, California where in was part of the 25 man Honor Guard with the 6th Army. During his time there, SFC Sell participated and won both the Company Soldier of the Month Board and Battalion Soldier of the month Board and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His next assignment was to Panama in FEB 1993 and was immediately assigned to A Company, 5th BN, 87th Infantry at FT Davis as an Infantry Squad Leader where he served for the next three years in which time he deployed for 6 months in support of Operation Safe Haven earning the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Joint Service Award. SFC Sell then left Panama and headed to Italy where he served in the 1-508th Parachute Infantry Regiment as the Operations Sergeant and Weapon’s Squad Leader. After completing his overseas duty, SFC Sell volunteered for Drill Sergeant Duty and was assigned to at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and served three years in 2nd Battalion 10th Infantry Basic Training Unit, FT Leonard Wood, MO for the next three years. After drill sergeant duty, SFC Sell was reassigned to Germany and reported there in FEB 2003. While stationed there he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he spent 15 months as a Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. SFC Sell led over 300 combat patrols in Iraq earning the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Global War on Terrorism Campaign Medal, the Global war on terrorism Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. SFC Michael Sell’s next assignment was an Instructor and Junior Advisor at Oregon State University in Corvallis from March 2005 until July 2008. SFC Sell attended the following schools: Basic Airborne Course, Jump Master Course, International Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol School (LLRPS), Belgium Airborne School, Sniper School, Air Assault School, Master Fitness Trainer Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Leadership Development Course, Advance Leadership Development Course, Jumpmaster School, and Drill Sergeant School

SFC Sell’s education includes a Bachelors of Arts degree from Columbia College in Criminal Justice and a Masters of Arts degree from Fort Hayes State University in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on Learning and Teaching.
